Quitting Smoking: Smoking Myths
Mythbusters: some common assumptions about quitting smoking debunked
Smoking has become a crutch for me and now I need it to live.
-Human beings are not naturally inclined to harm their bodies.
Smoking is an unnatural and unhealthy process for the body and therefore
can be overcome.
I
know many people in their later years who are still smoking and have not
contracted lung disease.
-This is the false belief in one’s invulnerability –
a smoking myth. Sadly, every year close to 342, 000 Americans die of lung
disease. Lung disease is becoming increasingly common. People who have
smoked their entire lives and have not contracted the illness are the
exception. Be also aware that, aside from lung disease, smoking can cause
emphysema, heart disease, mouth cancer as well as other ailments.
There is no history of lung disease in my family
-Lung disease can affect anyone, regardless of age, culture,
or family history. You should also be aware of the dangers of second hand
smoke.
I need smoking to perform better and more creatively in my everyday
life
-There is no connection between smoking and creativity or productivity.
Period. Many smokers believe this smoking myth because it promotes the
cigarette as an effective work tool.
This will be my last cigarette - I will stop tomorrow
-This is called “the tomorrow myth” and is the major excuse that people use over and over again in order to avoid quitting smoking. Don’t continue to fool yourself, quit smoking today and show that you really mean it!
Smoking is just bad habit
-Smoking is not just a habit, it is an addiction! Be aware of its health hazards and be prepared to suffer the potential consequences.
The best way to quit is cold turkey
While this method of quitting smoking may be effective for some individuals, it may not work for you. Rest assured that quitting cold turkey is difficult and it is not the only way to kick the habit. There are many methods available that can increase your chances of stopping smoking.
Quitting is expensive
-Methods that can help you to quit smoking cost between $3 to $10 a day, but smoking will cost you approximately over $1,000 per year. Do the math - smoking is not only a drain on your wallet, but also costly to your health! To calculate how much smoking has cost you so far, use the American Cancer Society’s smoking calculator.
